I wrestled through this passage from John this morning, here’s what I thought.
Jesus knew it was coming; Jesus knew what He had to do; He had received the strategy from the Father that morning. He knew what the plan was. He also had clear warning from the Holy Spirit not to confront head on, such as to call out the hypocrisy of the men – that would’ve been a mistake. Satan’s strategy was to divide. To confront the men head on would have affected public opinion in less than ideal ways in terms of advancing God’s purpose (to save humanity from sin).
Once the bait was laid out and the snare was set (in plain sight for all to see), Jesus followed both the Fathers will – the plan/strategy The Father had laid out – and the leading of the Holy Spirit (not to engage head-on). Following the plan, Jesus wrote in the sand; He wrote down what the Fathers will was for each person – eg. for me personally Jesus would perhaps have written about God’s expectations of me as a dad – clearly contrasting the judgement I’m executing (in the name of justice) with the justice I rightly deserve.
I got the impression that Jesus was very angry at these men.
